The village itself is large and fairly built up, offering plenty of facilities and lively nightlife.
The Slopes A large network of spacious green slopes immediately above the village provide an excellent nursery area. In addition there are several long easy runs, such as Les Hirondelles. The choice for intermediates is hard to beat, with challenging reds, great cruising runs and tree lined off-piste above Vaujany. Alpe d'Huez is an excellent resort for experts, with long, testing black runs including La Sarenne, which at 16km is one of the longest black runs in the Alps. The slope beneath Pic Blanc has a serious mogul field reached by a 300m tunnel and there are abundant off-piste opportunities, in particular around the Signal sector.
Ski School The Ecole du Ski Français provides courses for all levels and disciplines with English-speaking instructors. Six day courses are available either in the morning or the afternoon. For a small charge you can enter ski school races which are organised during the week. Private tuition ranges from around €32 an hour for one or two people and €40 an hour for three or four people.
Boarding The extent and variety of this huge area provides excellent free-riding opportunities both on and off-piste. There is a snowboard park beside the nursery slopes with a half-pipe and boarder-cross circuit and a new fun park at Auris. This boarder-friendly resort is ideal for beginners who will gain confidence on the gentle runs. Pre-bookable six day classes are available for all levels in the afternoon.
Après-ski Sports facilities in Alpe d'Huez include a sports complex with indoor tennis and squash courts, indoor pool and Olympic-size ice rink. You will also find a good selection of pubs, a couple of discos, snack bars, pizzerias and dozens of restaurants. |
