The Shrine of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, Southern Italy, is the second-most visited Catholic shrine in the world and you can travel there with Topflight from only €999. The remains of Padre Pio are now on display in a glass-covered coffin inside the crypt of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Convent where he died in 1968. Visits to the shrine have been booked as far ahead as September 2009. You can travel to Naples with GOHOP.IE for a week and take in a tour of San Giovanno. The shrine centers around Padre Pio's tomb, which is inside the Church of Our Lady of Grace (Santa Maria delle Grazie). Here you can also see his cell, his confessional, the crucifix from which he received the stigmata, and nearly everything he owned or touched, carefully preserved and labeled. Behind Santa Maria delle Grazie is the Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church, completed in 2004 and considered a notable example of modern architecture. Designed by the Genoan architect Renzo Piano, it can accommodate 6,500 people seated at worship and 30,000 people standing outside. The shrine also includes a modern Way of the Cross (Via Crucis) on the forested hillside above, regular processions, and an English-speaking pilgrim's office. The city takes its name from the Rotonda di San Giovanni, an old building on the edge of the old town. As of the year 2000, there were more than 50 new hotels in San Giovanni Rotondo to accommodate the throngs of visitors. Set in the exclusive upscale district of Parioli, Hotel Degli Aranci offers a welcoming atmosphere, comprehensive professional services and stylish accommodations near Villa Borghese, the Auditorium, and the Olympic Stadium.
Surrounded by small gardens, the hotel occupies an elegantly renovated villa built in the early 19th century. Its décor presents warm colours and soft lights, creating a hospitable and relaxing retreat in the midst of one of Rome’s most prestigious neighbourhoods.
The hotel features amenities including a well-equipped gym with sauna and Jacuzzi, a magnificent terrace for you to enjoy drinks and meals, and its own gourmet restaurant serving superb renditions of classic Italian specialities. |
