Grenada

Grenada - also known as the Spice of the Caribbean, beautiful unspoilt island located just 40 minutes flight from Barbados.

Not only does the 'Spice Island' produce nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, this rugged land of mountains, rainforests, waterfalls and secluded beaches has also given birth to an intriguing history and people.

The capital, St George's, is located on Grenada Island and has one of the prettiest harbor settings in the Caribbean. Carriacou is dotted with traditional East Caribbean towns and friendly locals, while Petit Martinique offers the chance to unwind in a little-known corner of the world.

This small nation consists of three islands: Grenada, Carriacou (pronounced Carry-a KOO), and Petite Martinique (pronounced Pitty Mar-ti-NEEK). Grenada is by far the largest of the three, with a width of twelve miles (18 km) and a length of twenty-one miles (34 km).

Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, is known as the most picturesque city in the Caribbean. Its horseshoe-shaped harbour is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red-tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes. Rich in English, French and West Indian history, St. George’s is filled with beautiful well-preserved examples of French and British Colonial architecture.

As for cuisine, visitors can indulge in some of the most exciting in the region, from native Grenadian fare, made from the fresh bountiful produce that is found in the bustling markets to some of the finest creations in international cuisine. West Indian cuisine is of course popular, with restaurants featuring creative local cuisine such as callaloo soup, a melange of fresh local seafood, and meats prepared with a true West Indian flare.

With its warm weather, there really isn't a bad time to visit Grenada - temperatures average 29°C (84°F). Winter is prime fishing season and, accordingly, the Spice Island Billfish Tournament, which draws anglers from around North America and the Caribbean, is held annually in January.

Interesting sights include:

FORT GEORGE

Grenada's oldest fort, built by the French in 1705, offers stunning views of the harbor, the Lagoon and Grande Anse. Inside the inner fort is the courtyard where Maurice Bishop was executed. You can still see the bullet holes made by the firing squad.

With its lush and mountainous interior, Grenada, "The Spice of the Caribbean", is being steadily discovered by nature lovers of all types including hikers, mountain bikers, birdwatchers and waterfall buffs. Recreational sports enthusiasts will find the island offers an abundance of activities and facilities to keep them entertained. And for those looking to experience the true essence and character of Grenada, sightseeing and historical sites abound as well as unique shops and outstanding cuisine.

Customer Review: My girl friend and I have just returned from a wonderful week at the Flamboyant Hotel in Grenada. The hotel is in a great position on a hill at the "quiet" end of Grand Anse beach. On the hill means steps, but on the hill also means the most fabulous views from almost every vantage point. The main dining room must have some of the best "dining" views around from the huge picture windows, it's like sitting on a cruise ship! Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all very tasty and the staff very attentive and friendly. Grenada is a very beautiful Island and great fun to drive around even without road signs! The people on the island mirrored the "Flamboyant friendliness" and made hiring a car a great way to see the Island.........what more can I say.

We will return as soon as possible.
